Open Book Collective is an organization for first-generation, low-income (FGLI) college students, run by FGLI college students. Our goal is to foster community and creating networking opportunities for FGLI students in the Middle Tennessee area. Our name is inspired by our mission to create spaces where FGLI students can speak openly about their experiences and engage in dialogue about the challenges and insights that they face.
Open Book Collective recognizes that although we share this identity, the experience of being an FGLI student can differ for a number of reasons. Not only do other aspects of our identities intersect with one another, but the type of college or University we attend, our goals, and family background are just a of among variables that shape our experience. In order to do justice to representing the diversity of FGLI student experiences, our website features resources, as well as the creative work of FGLI students, ranging from paintings and poetry to podcasts of FGLI students' stories. In addition to showcasing creative work, we host event during the academic year that are focused on FGLI issues. You can see our current initiatives as well as our past and future events on "Initiatives and Events" page of our website.
The founding of Open Book Collective would not be possible without the generous support we've received from The Curb Center at Vanderbilt. For more about their work , please click here.
